Portbyhan Hotel Looe, owned by Edwards Coaches based in South Wales has enjoyed a great level of success in recent months. Edwards Coaches is a family run business now in its 5th generation of ownership since opening in 1925. Covering a staggering eleven million miles per year, with a fleet of over 210 vehicles on the road everyday, the company is enjoying it’s most successful period in it’s history leading to an unprecedented year for awards, as Edwards Coaches scooped awards across the UK coach and travel industry.
Portbyhan Hotel is situated in the secluded town of Looe in South West Cornwall. With an Edwards Coaches investment of £1.5 million into the redevelopment of the hotel, the emphasis was very much on bringing the hotel back to its former glory. The renovation project, headed by TGL Property and Project Manager Colin Crabb with lead architect Steve Huckstep, was seen as a great success in the local area. With the focus firmly set on involving the local community, the food, infrastructure and the staff are all from the town of Looe and surrounding areas. Following the completion of the project, TGL Property won the award for the best Commercial Renovation/ Redevelopment in the UK, an accolade widely recognised.
The future of the Hotel is certainly a bright one, with the local economy seeing a growth of 33% since the completion of the project and over half a million paid in wages to the forty five full and part-time staff members, there is certainly a feel good factor around the town. A feeling which continues right through the winter months where Looe continues to thrive as the hotel draws in around 8,000 visitors. Where the majority of small, fishing towns across the UK quietly come to rest in the winter months, the opposite is very much the case with Looe as people continue to fill the hotel; contributing to the total of 88,000 visitors they saw in 2014 up from 61,000 in 2013. At the hotel, they can expect to see a TripAdvisor Certificate of Excellence, a 5 Star Food Hygiene award along with an overall 3 Star Visit England rating, which was achieved within the first year of operating.
